Dr Maurizio Pacilli
Paediatric Surgeon

Maurizio is a triple-qualified (Italy, United Kingdom, Australia, and New
Zealand) academic surgeon working as a specialist paediatric surgeon at
Monash Children’s Hospital and as a Senior Research Fellow at Monash
University. He has been working in the field of paediatric surgery for more
than 20 years. Maurizio obtained his medical degree in Italy at the
University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2000. He completed his training in
paediatric surgery in Italy in 2005 and moved to the United Kingdom to
focus on his career in clinical research.
Maurizio was granted membership in the Royal College of Surgeons of
England in 2006 and completed additional training in paediatric surgery in
the United Kingdom at various hospitals, including Great Ormond Street
Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Cambridge University
Hospital, and Oxford University Hospital. He also trained for one year at
the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. In 2010, Maurizio obtained a
higher degree (MD Research) from University College London for his
research on minimally invasive surgery in children. He completed his
second training in the United Kingdom and achieved the Fellowship of the
Royal College of Surgeons in Paediatric Surgery in 2015.
In 2017, Maurizio joined Monash Children’s Hospital and Monash
University, and in 2022, he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal
Australasian College of Surgeons. Maurizio has a keen interest in
minimally invasive techniques for paediatric and neonatal surgery, as well
as colorectal surgery, including anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung
disease. He is also particularly interested in vascular anomalies, such as
haemangiomas and lymphatic malformations, and he established the
vascular anomaly multidisciplinary team at Monash Children’s Hospital.
Maurizio is passionate about clinical research, with a focus on minimally
invasive surgery and randomised controlled trials. His research has earned
him numerous awards, including prizes from the Association of
Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Canadian Association of Paediatric
Surgeons. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Peter Paul Rickham
Prize by the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons.
Maurizio has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed scientific
journals, contributed 5 chapters to books, and authored more than 150
presentations at international conferences.
