Patient Information: EEG

EEG for children

At Offspring, we understand that as a parent or guardian, you want the best for your child’s health. That’s why we’re here to guide you through the process of children’s EEG (Electroencephalogram), a safe and painless test that helps us understand what’s happening in your child’s brain

What is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that records brain activity through electrodes attached to the scalp. EEG recordings are used to identify changes in brain activity. These changes in brain activity are often useful in diagnosing brain disorders, especially epilepsy or other seizure disorders.

Why Does Your Child Need an EEG?

Your doctor may recommend an EEG to help understand any of the following:
• Seizures
• Fainting spells
• Blackouts or blank stares
• Jerking movements
• Funny turns
• Sleep disturbances
• Reassessment of an existing diagnosis

What to Expect During an EEG:

During the EEG, electrodes are placed on your child’s scalp to record brain activity. Rest assured, the procedure is pain-free, and your child can bring along their favourite toys or books for comfort.

Preparation for the EEG:

Ensure your child’s hair is clean and dry before the appointment. If your child has recently had chickenpox or has special needs, please inform our staff in advance.

Post-EEG and Results:

After the EEG, your child can resume their normal activities with no side effects. Results will be provided through your doctor, usually within 3-5 working days.
