The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes provides a range of services and clinics for children up to 18 years of age with diabetes, endocrine (hormone) and growth disorders.

One-third of children newly diagnosed with diabetes in Victoria every year are managed at Monash Children’s Hospital. They are diagnosed, assessed and ongoing management is provided including assistance and education for patients to help them manage their diabetes at home.

We also manage children with disorders of sexual development and puberty and are part of a state-wide service for children with disorders of sexual differentiation.

At Monash Children’s Hospital we strive to co-ordinate care of children and families with complex disorders and conditions.

We provide a tertiary referral inpatient service and outpatient clinics and services including one of two paediatric growth clinics in Victoria. We also provide outreach services in Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula.

Emergency inpatient care includes paediatric intensive care unit admissions and inpatient consultations for other units for endocrinology and diabetes patients aged under 19 years. The department also provides neonatal endocrine intensive care unit ward consultations.

Our outpatient services provide continual care and follow-up including after in-patient care for unstable diabetes or emergency situations. We provide a continuum of care as children and adolescents with diabetes are transferred to Monash Health diabetes services once they reach adulthood.

The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes provides outpatient diagnosis, assessment and ongoing management including phone and direct access for newly diagnosed patients with diabetes and those with existing diabetes without having to admit them to hospital.

We work closely with many other departments at Monash Children’s Hospital and Monash Health to co-manage complex multifactorial diseases.

Diabetes emergencies

For newly diagnosed diabetes medical emergencies please contact the on call endocrinology registrar through Monash Health switch on (03) 9594 6666. Referrals for all new cases of paediatric and adolescent diabetes should be directed straight to the paediatric endocrinologist via Monash Children’s Switchboard for discussion, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (DPED) provides outpatient diagnosis, assessment and ongoing management for newly diagnosed patients and patients with existing diabetes without having to admit them to hospital. Our diabetes team is made up of Paediatric endocrinologists, registrar and resident doctors, diabetes educators, dietitians, social workers and a clinical psychologist to provide the best care for our patients. DPED offers stabilisation programs for newly diagnosed and existing patients with sub-optimal control, continuous blood glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy initiation and review.

Another unique service is a state-wide service for children with disorders of sexual differentiation. We work closely with our colleagues in urology and surgery to help provide the best possible outcomes for these children.

Our Metabolic Bone Clinic manages patients with bone disorders, metabolic bone disease and calcium metabolism disorders plus all children in Victoria with thalassemia. Our Paediatric Endocrinology and Nutrition Clinic manages obese children and adolescents and those with vitamin D deficiency rickets.

Our Paediatric Endocrine Clinic sees children with growth disorders, short stature, calcium disorders, precocious (early) puberty, delayed puberty, Turner’s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, hypothyroidism, hypoglycaemia, tall stature, adrenal and pituitary disorders and endocrine effects or complications of haemato-oncology and its treatment.

Social and emotional functioning refers to a child’s ability to understand, express, and manage their emotions, as well as to interact effectively with others. These skills are fundamental for building positive relationships, developing empathy, and coping with the everyday challenges of growing up.

Children who experience difficulties in social and emotional functioning may struggle with recognizing their own feelings or those of others, regulating emotional responses, or responding appropriately in social situations. This can lead to challenges such as anxiety, low self-esteem, difficulty making friends, or misunderstandings with peers and adults.

In the school environment, social and emotional difficulties can impact a child’s engagement, cooperation, and overall learning experience. Emotional distress may manifest as withdrawal, irritability, or disruptive behaviour, which can further affect academic progress and peer relationships.

Assessment of social and emotional functioning as part of a neuropsychological evaluation typically includes behavioural observations, standardized rating scales, and information gathered from parents, teachers, and sometimes the child. This comprehensive approach helps identify strengths and areas for support in emotional regulation, social skills, and adaptive behaviours.

Understanding a child’s social-emotional profile allows for the development of tailored strategies to enhance emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and improve social communication. Early intervention and supportive environments can empower children to navigate their emotions more effectively, fostering confidence and meaningful connections.

At Offspring Health, we aim to provide transparent information about the costs involved in neurodevelopmental and educational assessments.

Neuropsychological assessments typically involve multiple sessions that usually take between 8 and 16 hours in total, depending on the complexity and individual needs. Our hourly rate is $260, so the total cost typically ranges between $2,300 and $4,230.

    Fees generally cover:

    • Initial consultation and history gathering
    • Testing sessions where your child will complete various fun and interactive tasks
    • Liaison with schools or health professionals as needed
    • Comprehensive case analysis and report preparation
    • Feedback sessions with families and, where applicable, educators or other professionals

Please note that standard neuropsychological assessments are generally not covered by Medicare. However, some assessments and therapy services may be funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eligible participants. We recommend discussing funding options with your NDIS planner or support coordinator prior to booking. Private health insurance may offer partial rebates depending on your level of coverage.
